MOTHER TERASA EDUCATIONAL TRUST

Mother Terasa Educational Trust (MET) was formed by P. Ramar, a social activist with the vision to promote the deprived section of the community with best realistic approaches. MET was duly registered in the year 2008 incorporating 4 more trustees. The trust has been under the governance of the board of trustees with their continued service and timely support. We are working among the needy children through the children’s clubs formed in the target areas; in the same way, we also have youth clubs in the rural areas where they are reached with numbers life skill programs and women are organized into SHGs and for them we have income generation activities by which they enhance their livelihood. Besides all the above regular activities we are running a Shelter for Homeless Urban Poor in Madurai with the support of Madurai Corporation and both the state and national governments.

Food Donation Drop-Off

Food and Accommodation:
The inmates in the Shelter are living as extended joint family without any discrimination. Though we use the word ‘inmates’ for official purposes, we are members of one family. Carefully prepared nutritional food is being provided 3 times a day and two time tea and snacks served. All members of the home given cot and beddings and sanitation facilities also given.

Health Clinic

Health Care
Periodical medical checkups are carried out. A general physician (GP) do regular visit to the home and do the basic treatment and as and when members need further consultation and treatment it is done with specialist doctors, in Corporation hospitals and General Hospital. Further, charity hospitals, like Arvind Eye Hospital also of our service.

Psychological Counselling
A trained Social worker cum Counsellor gives psycho-social support in the form of counselling whereby their emotional stress are reduced to the maximum and feel at home. This includes volunteers visiting and spending time with home members in meaningful sharing and caring.

Homeless Outreach

The Shelter for Homeless Urban Poor was formed in the year 2010 after doing a survey of the people who were in public places without a proper shelter. The shelter is the outcome of compassion shown to the people deserted themselves in the streets, pavements of bus stands and railway stations in Madurai. These inmates in the shelter are forsaken and impoverished children, women and men who were found begging around and wandering haplessly.
Mother Terasa Educational Trust (MET) accommodating 150 members at the shelter from the streets after informing and presented them to Madurai Corporation authorities. There are 2 shelter homes which accommodate members from age 4 to 96, which has become full-fledged home by assiduous and constant effort of MET.

Notwithstanding, the financial constraint, MET, running the home by the benevolent support of general public sporadically. The monthly financial support, now, is provided by National Urban Livelihood Mission which meets the partial financial need of running the Shelter. This is the first Shelter in Tamil Nadu which is a model followed by other states of the Nation.
